September unfortunately was a bit of a rough month for me. I had a lot of things going on in the background that had to take precedence for a while. There was a lot of music I wanted to write about that was certainly noteworthy and much to my chagrin, I was not able to get to it all. In fact, my goal was to write reviews for all of the albums featured in this. I hope with this “Best of September” article, I can right my wrongs and shed some light on the mightiest music of the month.
Music included in this list are albums that are officially released in the month of September. So for example: Deafheaven’s new album officially comes out tomorrow so it will be included in anything associated with October, even though it can be heard now. Without further ado, here’s what I believe to be the best of September…
Behold! the Monolith – Architects of the Void
The Los Angeles ensemble have struck back from tragedy and drove a sword through the norm of doom/stoner metal with Architects of the Void. Channeling sludgescapes from Remission-era Mastodon, early thrash of Metallica, and dashes of funeral doom that recall the recent Bell Witch album, Four Phantoms; B!TM have crafted a genuinely unique experience. With the help of Billy Anderson (Pallbearer, High on Fire, Leviathan, etc.), who returned to the fray to produce and “engine-ear” the album, Architects of the Void is certainly deserving of consideration for everyone’s “Best of the Year” lists.
My favorite tracks from the album include: “The Philosopher’s Blade”, “The Mithriditist”, and “Between Oder and Vistula”
The Black Dahlia Murder – Abysmal (Metal Blade)
Like clockwork, The Black Dahlia Murder were back with yet another lesson in melodic death metal this month. The Michigan metalheads have been a model of consistency over the course of their career, showing marked improvement with every album. Abysmal is certainly no exception. TBDM has generated such a refined sound to their sonic Hell and have such clinical execution, it’s difficult to see them slowing down anytime soon.
My favorite tracks from the album include: “Vlad, Son of the Dragon”, “Threat Level No. 3”, and “Asylum”
Black Wing – ..Is Doomed (The Flenser)
Dan Barrett is a very busy man. Dan Barrett is also a very talented man. When he’s not playing with Have A Nice Life, Giles Corey, Nahvalr, or Black Wing, he’s running a record label AND a web design/SEO consultancy. You would think with his hands in so many things, that something would be lacking quality at some point. Well you thought wrong and you especially thought wrong with the new Black Wing album, …Is Doomed. Barrett’s depressive chillwave sound has provided a skilled and somber contrast to the other music in this feature and much of the music I listen to.
My favorite tracks from the album include: “Black Wing”, “My Body Betrayed Me”, and “If I Let Him In”
Parkway Drive – Ire (Epitaph)
I recently wrote a review for Parkway Drive’s resurgent new album. You can read it in its entirety here.
