San Francisco’s Deafheaven turned the black metal world on its head with 2013’s Sunbather. It won the honor of being Metacritic’s highest rated album of the year beating out other albums such as Beyonce’s self-titled album and Daft Punk’s Random Access Memories. What Sunbather also accomplished was creating a chasm in the black metal community, dramatically splitting opinions on the album’s merits as a black metal album. Deafheaven blended elements of black/death metal, shoegaze, and post-rock to total perfection and completely redefined the standard for United States black metal.
We are now two years into this post-Sunbather world and today it has been announced that Deafheaven will be following up their masterpiece with the October 2nd release of New Bermuda. The album artwork is significantly different from Sunbather, in that it looks more like a traditional metal album. It is still an aesthetically pleasing album cover (the oil painting is done by Allison Schulnick), it just happens to not be pink this time around.
The tracklisting for New Bermuda is as follows:
- Brought to the Water
- Baby Blue
- Come Back
- Gifts for the Earth
