Coheed & Cambria Announce New Album, Release New Song

Abandoning a winning formula for the sake of trying something outside of the proverbial box is a risky move, but it’s a risk Claudio Sanchez is willing to take.

Sanchez is the lead singer, guitarist, and creative genius behind New York’s prog rock/metal four-piece, Coheed & Cambria. Sanchez is the creator and writer of “The Amory Wars”, a sci-fi storyline and comic book series that also serves as inspiration for the concepts of Coheed & Cambria’s albums. With each album comes a new chapter in the story of Heaven’s Fence (the setting of “The Amory Wars”.)

Today, C&C announced a new record, entitled The Color Before the Sun, and released the first single from it called “You Got Spirit, Kid”. With this announcement and release came the news that this will be Coheed & Cambria’s first album that does not have a concept or adds to “The Amory Wars”. In a press release, it was stated:

The Color Before The Sun marks the first time Claudio Sanchez is exposing his raw feelings, narrated from his own perspective. “I kind of want people to know that Coheed can write that sort of record,” he explained of the album’s departure from The Amory Wars. “I’ve always said in the past that there’s never been a limitation on the band. It makes no sense to me to draw a line in the sand and never cross it.”

While the band is leaving behind the concept idea, the song itself does not stray too far from their musical formula. It is noticeably different than their most recent efforts, The Afterman: Ascension and The Afterman: Descension (both of which I still listen to regularly), but it does well to explore a different facet of Coheed & Cambria. I’m excited to see what the rest of the album will sound like. The Color Before the Sun comes out October 9th on 300 Entertainment.
